Frontier cancelled your flight? Refund or credit: what to pick

Frontier's app pushes a travel credit first. If Frontier cancelled the flight, or delayed it 3+ hours, you can take your money back instead, even on the cheapest fare. Here is what Frontier's own plan promises, what it doesn't, and how to ask.

The 30-second answer

Cancelled, or delayed 3+ hours (domestic) / 6+ hours (international), and you didn't fly: you're owed a refund of the fare, taxes and paid extras (bags, seats) to your original card. Frontier says it processes refunds within 7 business days.

Don't click "travel credit" unless you want one. Frontier's plan says the refund isn't available if you chose a credit instead, and most Frontier vouchers and credits expire 90 days after issue.

What Frontier won't pay: its refund page says it does not cover hotels, reimburse expenses or pay cash compensation for delays or cancellations, even when the cause is mechanical.

Refund vs credit: side by side

DeadlineRequest it; Frontier processes within 7 business daysMost expire 90 days from issue; you must book (not fly) before then; no extensions
Best whenYou booked another airline, the trip is off, or you're unsure you'll fly Frontier again within 90 daysYou'll definitely rebook Frontier soon and the credit is worth more than the cash (rare)
CatchNot available if you flew the rebooked or delayed flightChoosing it gives up the refund for that trip

That gap matters at night: if Frontier cancels the last flight and the next one is tomorrow, it does not promise a hotel. Check whether the credit card you paid with includes trip delay coverage (many travel cards pay hotel and meals after a 6 or 12 hour delay), or your travel insurance. Keep every receipt either way. More on overnight costs: flight delayed overnight: hotel and meals by airline.

How to get the refund (step by step)

  1. Don't accept the rebooking or the credit in the app if you want cash. Taking the rebooked flight or the credit ends the refund option for that trip.
  2. Use Frontier's "Rebooking/Refund Options" at travel.flyfrontier.com (sign in with your confirmation code). Choose the refund to the original payment method.
  3. If the self-service page won't offer a refund, use Frontier's refund request form (linked from flyfrontier.com/refund-options). Include your confirmation code, the cancelled or delayed flight number and date, and "I did not travel; requesting a refund to my original form of payment under the DOT refund rule."
  4. Screenshot the cancellation notice or the delay time in the app. The 3-hour domestic / 6-hour international threshold is counted on departure or arrival time.
  5. Wait 7 business days, then check your card. Card issuers can take a few more days to post it.

If Frontier refuses or stalls

  1. File a complaint with the US Department of Transportation at transportation.gov/airconsumer (free). Airlines must respond to DOT complaints.
  2. Dispute the charge with your card issuer if you paid by credit card and the service (the flight) wasn't provided. Card disputes have time limits, usually around 60 days from the statement date, so don't wait months.
  3. Keep it in writing. Chat transcripts and emails are better evidence than phone calls.

Frontier vs the big US airlines

American, United and Delta promise hotels for overnight delays they cause, and some will rebook you on a partner airline. Frontier's plan promises neither. If a fast replacement flight matters more than the refund, you may do better cancelling for a refund and booking another airline yourself. Compare: Southwest, American, United, Delta.

Flying Frontier to or from Europe?

Frontier doesn't fly to Europe or the UK, so EU and UK compensation rules don't apply to a Frontier flight. If another leg of your trip left an EU or UK airport on a different airline and arrived 3+ hours late, you may be owed up to €600 for that leg: see flight delay compensation.
