United Airlines flight delayed or cancelled? What to ask for

What United owes you depends on whether the delay was within United's control. Here is what its own Customer Commitment promises, what US rules add, and what to say at the gate or in the app.

The 30-second answer

Delay caused by United (a mechanical issue, for example): ask for a meal voucher once you are waiting more than 3 hours, a hotel voucher and a ride if you are stuck overnight away from home, and rebooking, on a partner airline if United has nothing until the next day.

Weather or other causes outside United's control: United says it may be able to get you a discounted hotel and free toiletries, but it does not promise free meals or rooms. You can still get a refund if you decide not to fly after a cancellation or significant delay.

What United's Customer Commitment promises when it caused the delay

You can ask forWhen
Rebooking on the next United flight with seats, same cabin, no extra costAny delay or cancellation
Rebooking on a partner airlineSame-day delay or cancellation within United's control, and no United flight until the next day (ask for it)
Meal voucher (digital or printed)Waiting more than 3 hours because of a cause within United's control
Hotel voucher at a partner hotel, or reimbursement of a reasonable hotel if none is availableOvernight, away from your home city
Ride voucher to the hotelSame overnight delay, if the hotel has no shuttle

From United's Customer Commitment page, read October 10, 2026. The US DOT delay dashboard lists the same meal, hotel, transport and rebooking commitments for United and shows no cash compensation, travel credit or miles for a 3+ hour delay.

One catch in United's wording: if you turn down a voucher it offered, it says it won't pay you back for meals or hotels you buy yourself. Take the voucher, or get it in writing that none is available.

Refunds: when you can get your money back

Under US DOT rules, if the flight is cancelled or significantly changed and you choose not to travel, you are owed a refund, even on a non-refundable ticket. United says you may be able to cancel and refund in one step in the United app or on united.com. If an agent cancels for you instead, you then complete United's refund request form.

If you are offered a travel credit instead, read voucher or cash refund: which to take first. Full DOT rules are in US airline refund rules.

What to say at the gate or in the app

  1. Ask the cause: "Is this delay within United's control?" Mechanical problems usually are; weather usually isn't.
  2. Rebook first. In the United app, tap "Rebooking options" or "View other flights". If United has nothing until tomorrow, ask about a partner airline.
  3. Check "View vouchers" in the app once you pass 3 hours. United says to ask if one doesn't appear automatically.
  4. Stuck overnight? Ask for the hotel and ride vouchers. If no partner hotel has rooms, book something reasonable, keep the receipt, and send it to United Customer Care.
  5. Not flying anymore? Cancel and request a refund, not a credit.
  6. Need proof of the delay? United says you can request a statement at united.com/customercare.

Flying United to or from Europe or the UK?

If your United flight left an EU or UK airport, EU or UK rules can also apply, with cash compensation of up to €600 or £520 for a long delay the airline caused. See flight delay compensation and UK flight delay compensation.
