Delta flight delayed or cancelled? What to ask for

What Delta owes you depends on whether the delay was within Delta's control. Here is what its own Customer Service Plan promises, what US rules add, and what to say at the gate or in the app.

The 30-second answer

Delay caused by Delta: ask for a meal or meal voucher once you are 3+ hours past your scheduled departure, a hotel and transport if you are stuck overnight, and rebooking, on another airline Delta has a ticketing agreement with if Delta has no flight.

Weather or other causes outside Delta's control: Delta's plan only promises meals and hotels when the cause is within its control. Rebooking at no extra cost still applies, and you can get a refund if you decide not to fly after a cancellation or significant delay.

What Delta's Customer Service Plan promises when it caused the delay

You can ask forWhen
Meal or meal voucherWait of 3 or more hours past scheduled departure
Hotel at a Delta-contracted property (based on availability)Overnight delay, cancellation or missed connection
Transport to and from the hotelSame overnight situation
Reimbursement of a reasonable room and transport you book yourselfIf no Delta-contracted room is available
Credit of similar value to the contracted hotel rate (on request)If no rooms are available at all

From Delta's Customer Service Plan (effective October 24, 2024), read October 11, 2026. The US DOT delay dashboard lists the same meal, hotel and transport commitments for Delta and shows no cash compensation, travel credit or miles for a 3+ hour delay.

Rebooking: on Delta, or on another airline

For significant delays, cancellations or missed connections, Delta's plan says it will rebook you on the next available Delta flight at no extra cost. If no Delta flight is available, it says it will arrange a flight on another airline it has a ticketing agreement with, also at no extra cost. Ask for this directly if the agent or app only offers Delta flights the next day.

Refunds: when you can get your money back

Under US DOT rules, if the flight is cancelled or significantly changed and you choose not to travel, you are owed a refund, even on a non-refundable ticket. Delta's plan says credit card refunds are typically issued within 7 business days of receiving your request (they can take up to two billing cycles to show), and cash or check refunds within 20 days. You can request one on delta.com's refund page, at a Delta ticket counter, or through Reservations; if you booked through a travel agent, the agent submits it.

If you are offered an eCredit instead, read voucher or cash refund: which to take first. Full DOT rules are in US airline refund rules.

What to say at the gate or in the app

  1. Ask the cause: "Is this delay within Delta's control?" Crew and maintenance usually are; weather usually isn't.
  2. Rebook first. Seats on the next flights go fast. If Delta has nothing, ask about a flight on another airline.
  3. Ask for the meal voucher once you pass 3 hours, and for a hotel and transport if you're stuck overnight.
  4. No contracted room? Book something reasonable, keep every receipt, and ask Delta to reimburse it.
  5. Not flying anymore? Decline the rebooking and request a refund, not an eCredit.

Flying Delta to or from Europe or the UK?

If your Delta flight left an EU or UK airport, EU or UK rules can also apply, with cash compensation of up to €600 or £520 for a long delay the airline caused. See flight delay compensation and UK flight delay compensation.
