American Airlines flight delayed or cancelled? What to ask for

What American owes you depends on whether the delay was American's fault. Here is what its own customer service plan promises, what US rules add, and what to say at the desk or in the app.

The 30-second answer

Delay caused by American (crew, maintenance and the like): ask for a meal credit once you are 3+ hours late, a hotel and transport if you are stuck overnight away from home, and rebooking, on a partner airline if American has nothing until the next day.

Weather or air traffic control: American's plan says you cover your own hotel and meals. You can still get a refund if you decide not to fly after a cancellation or significant delay.

What American's plan promises when it caused the delay

You can ask forWhen
Food or drink creditDelay of 3 or more hours past scheduled departure
Hotel voucher (or reimbursement of a reasonable hotel)Overnight delay, away from your home city
Transport between airport and hotel (or reimbursement)Same overnight delay
Rebooking on American at no extra costNext American flight with seats
Rebooking on a partner airlineIf no American flight is available until the next day

From American's customer service plan (page updated August 26, 2026). The US DOT delay dashboard lists the same commitments for American and shows no cash compensation, travel credit or miles for a 3+ hour delay.

Refunds: when you can get your money back

Under US DOT rules, if the flight is cancelled or significantly changed and you choose not to travel, you are owed a refund, even on a non-refundable ticket. American's plan says it processes credit card refunds within 7 business days of getting your request and details, and cash or check refunds within 20 business days. You can request one at aa.com/refunds, through Reservations, or by mail.

If you are offered a travel credit instead, read voucher or cash refund: which to take first. Full DOT rules are in US airline refund rules.

What to say at the desk or in the app

  1. Ask the cause: "Is this delay within American's control?" Crew and maintenance usually are; weather usually isn't.
  2. Rebook first. Seats on the next flights go fast. If American has nothing until tomorrow, ask about a partner airline.
  3. Ask for the meal credit once you pass 3 hours, and for a hotel and transport voucher if you're stuck overnight away from home.
  4. No voucher available? Book something reasonable, keep every receipt, and note who told you to.
  5. Not flying anymore? Decline the rebooking and request a refund, not a credit.

Flying American to or from Europe or the UK?

If your American flight left an EU or UK airport, EU or UK rules can also apply, with cash compensation of up to €600 or £520 for a long delay the airline caused. See flight delay compensation and UK flight delay compensation.
