How to read this: for a trip of a week or less, Airalo’s 7-day plans were the lowest price at 5 GB and 10 GB. If your dates might move or you stay longer, Yesim’s and Saily’s 30-day validity gives more room for a similar price. Saily’s Japan page says it has no hotspot restrictions; for Airalo and Yesim, check the selected plan’s tethering terms.

Five checks before you buy
- Phone: confirm your exact model and regional variant supports eSIM and is network-unlocked. Use Airalo’s compatibility checker.
- Dates: count the days you need connectivity, including arrival and departure. If your trip exceeds seven days, compare a longer-validity package.
- Coverage: inspect the supported networks and coverage for your itinerary. A country listing does not promise reception everywhere.
- Calls and hotspot: these are data-only options. Do not assume a Japanese phone number, regular calls or SMS are included. Check the selected package’s tethering and other restrictions.
- Activation: read the selected plan’s validity-start rule and installation instructions. Have a stable internet connection for setup; do not assume every eSIM starts its clock the same way.
A simple buying decision
If your phone qualifies and your carrier’s roaming does not already meet your needs, compare the total cost for enough data and enough days. Pick the smallest allowance you are comfortable with after checking your own usage. “Unlimited” is not automatically the best value; inspect any speed, fair-use and hotspot conditions first.
Before departure, save the installation instructions and download useful maps for offline access. Follow your carrier’s and Airalo’s instructions for switching data lines so your usual SIM does not generate unwanted roaming charges.
