FLIGHT PROBLEMS · DELTA AIR LINES

Missed your Delta connection? Rebooking, hotel and meal rules (and where Delta's two rulebooks disagree)

If a late Delta flight made you miss your connection and both flights are on one ticket, Delta rebooks you on its next flight with seats at no cost, or on a partner airline if no Delta flight is available. If the delay was within Delta's control, you can also get a meal voucher once you are 3+ hours past the scheduled departure and a hotel if you are stuck overnight. Checked against Delta's Customer Service Plan and Contract of Carriage on October 29, 2026.

The 30-second answer

Same ticket, first flight late: next Delta flight with seats, free, in the cabin you bought; if no Delta flight works, a flight on another airline Delta has a ticketing agreement with (Customer Service Plan, item 12). Delta also says it makes "every reasonable effort" to move your checked bag onto the same flight.

Delay within Delta's control (crew, maintenance, its own operations): meal or meal voucher at 3+ hours past scheduled departure; Delta-contracted hotel plus transport if you are stuck overnight away from home; if Delta has no hotel and you book your own, it reimburses reasonable hotel and transport costs. Weather, air traffic control, other force majeure: rebooking only.

Rather get your money back? Ask for the refund before you accept or fly the new itinerary (Contract of Carriage Rule 19A).

Delta's two rulebooks do not say the same thing

Delta publishes two documents, and an agent may quote either one. The stricter one is the Contract of Carriage; the more generous one is the Customer Service Plan, which the US DOT can enforce. Quote the plan.

What you get in each situation

What to do in the next 15 minutes

  1. Open the Fly Delta app before you join the line. Delta may already have rebooked you. In Trip Support you can review the new flight, search other flights at no cost, tap Confirm, and get the new boarding pass (Delta's Rebook Me page).
  2. Use a kiosk if the app is stuck. Delta's self-service page says the kiosk Scan & Go tool scans your old boarding pass and prints the new one, "along with any meal or hotel vouchers when applicable".
  3. Ask why the first flight was late. Crew, maintenance or Delta's own operations count as within its control; weather does not. The answer decides meals and hotel.
  4. Ask for an earlier routing or another airline. If no Delta flight gets you there in a reasonable time, quote item 12 of the Customer Service Plan: Delta arranges a flight on an airline it has a ticketing agreement with.
  5. Not travelling any more? Say so before accepting anything and request the refund.
  6. Keep everything. Screenshots of the delay notice and new itinerary, and receipts for any hotel, taxi or meals you paid yourself.

Checklist

  • Both flights on one confirmation number (if not, call Delta before the missed flight leaves)
  • Delay reason noted (Delta vs weather), with a screenshot
  • New itinerary checked: same cabin as booked, bag rerouted
  • Meal voucher asked for at 3+ hours past scheduled departure (Delta-caused delays)
  • Hotel and transport asked for if overnight away from home (Delta-caused delays)
  • Receipts kept for anything you paid yourself
  • Refund decision made before accepting a rebooking

Extras Delta may give (no promise)

The Customer Service Plan says agents may give gift cards, travel credits or vouchers, or SkyMiles "when individual circumstances warrant doing so". That is at the agent's discretion. A polite request, with the delay reason and how long you have waited, is the realistic way to get one. If an agent refuses something the plan promises (meal voucher, hotel), ask for a supervisor and cite item 12; the US DOT customer service dashboard lists each airline's commitments, and you can file a DOT complaint if the plan is not honored.

Trips from the EU or UK (the only time a claim service helps)

If your trip on one booking left the EU or UK (Delta is not covered on flights into the EU, because it is not an EU airline) and you reached your final destination 3 or more hours late because of a missed connection within the airline's control, EU261 or UK261 can pay up to EUR 600 / GBP 520 per passenger, depending on distance. Delta has its own EU compensation request form under Change or Cancel on delta.com. Free route: claim directly with our EU261 claim letter. Paid route:

Common questions

Will Delta rebook me if I miss my connection?

Yes, when both flights are on one ticket. Delta's Customer Service Plan (item 12) says that if you misconnect it rebooks you on the next available Delta flight at no additional cost, and if no Delta flight is available it arranges a flight on another airline it has a ticketing agreement with. Delta often rebooks you automatically; check Trip Support in the Fly Delta app.

Does Delta pay for a hotel if I miss my connection?

Only when the delay was within Delta's control and you are stuck overnight away from home or your destination. The Customer Service Plan promises a Delta-contracted hotel plus transport, and if none is available and you book your own, reimbursement of reasonable hotel and ground transport costs. For weather and other force majeure events, Delta does not pay for the hotel.

When does Delta give a meal voucher?

The Customer Service Plan says Delta provides a meal or meal voucher when a cancellation or delay within its control means waiting 3 or more hours beyond the scheduled departure time. Kiosks can print meal and hotel vouchers with your new boarding pass. Delta does not publish the voucher amount.

Can I get a refund instead of the new flight?

Yes. Delta's Contract of Carriage (Rule 19A, last modified August 18, 2026) lists a change that makes you miss a connection as a case where Delta will cancel the rest of the ticket and refund the unused part and unused fees at your request. Ask before you accept or fly the new itinerary.

Does Delta pay cash compensation for a missed connection?

Not under US rules: there is no cash compensation law for US delays, and Delta agents give gift cards, credits or miles only at their discretion. Cash can apply under EU261 or UK261 when the trip on one booking left the EU or UK and you arrived 3+ hours late for a reason within the airline's control.

How we checked this

On October 29, 2026 we read Delta's Contract of Carriage (U.S.) (last modified August 18, 2026: Rule 14C failure to appear, Rule 14D check-in deadlines, Rule 19A and 19B delays and cancellations), its Customer Service Plan (item 12, effective October 24, 2024), its Rebook Me page and its self-service page for delays and missed connections. Delta does not publish meal voucher amounts, so none are quoted here. This is general information, not legal advice.
