FLIGHT PROBLEMS · AMERICAN AIRLINES
Missed your American Airlines connection? What American owes you, and what to do at the airport
If a late American flight made you miss your connection and both flights are on one ticket, American must rebook you at no extra cost, and if the delay was American's fault you can ask for a meal credit and, overnight, a hotel. Whether you get more depends on three things: who caused the delay, whether you accept the new flight, and where your trip started. Here is what American's own contract says, and what to do before you leave the gate area.

The 30-second answer
Same ticket, first flight late: American rebooks you on its next flight with seats at no cost, in your original cabin; if nothing on American leaves until the next day and American caused the delay, it can put you on a partner airline (Conditions of Carriage, updated August 13, 2026). Your bags are rerouted when you check in for the new flight.
American's fault (crew, maintenance, its own operations): ask for a food or beverage credit once you are 3+ hours past the scheduled departure, and a hotel voucher plus transport if you are stuck overnight away from home (Customer Service Plan, updated August 26, 2026). Weather or air traffic control: rebooking only; hotel and meals are on you.
Want your money back instead? Decline the rebooking first. Once you accept a new flight or fly the delayed one, American says you are not eligible for a refund.
What you get in each situation
| Your situation | What American's rules say | Do this |
|---|---|---|
| Missed connection, one ticket, delay caused by American | Next American flight with seats at no cost; partner airline if nothing until tomorrow. On request: food/beverage credit at 3+ hours, hotel voucher and transport if delayed overnight away from home. | Check the banner in the American app first, then ask the agent for the meal credit and hotel by name. |
| Missed connection, one ticket, weather or other cause outside American's control | Next American flight with seats at no cost. You pay your own hotel, meals and other expenses; an agent may help you find a hotel. | Rebook in the app straight away (seats go fast in storms). Ask whether the delay is coded as weather; save the answer. |
| Rebooked onto a flight 3+ hours later (domestic) or 4+ hours (international) and you no longer want to go | DOT rules and American's refund policy: refund of the unused ticket and paid extras, even on non-refundable fares, if you decline the rebooking. | Do not accept the new flight. Request the refund at aa.com/refunds. |
| Diverted to another city and not boarded by 11:59 p.m. | Hotel voucher, transport, and a food credit if delayed there more than 3 hours. | Ask at the diversion airport before leaving the gate area. |
| Missed the connection on separate tickets (for example American then another airline) | Each ticket is a separate contract; the second airline does not have to protect you. | Call the second airline before its departure. With a non-refundable American fare, cancelling before departure keeps a travel credit. |
| Trip started in the EU or UK, arrived 3+ hours late at the final destination | EU261 / UK261 can pay cash compensation on top of rebooking, unless extraordinary circumstances (like weather) caused it. | Claim from American directly first; see the section below. |
| Flight to or from Canada, delay within American's control | American's contract says Canada's Air Passenger Protection Regulations may add protections, including compensation. | See our Canada APPR guide for the amounts. |
What to do in the next 15 minutes
- Open the American app before you join the line. American says it rebooks you automatically: tap the banner on the home screen, review the new trip, pick a different flight if the one chosen does not suit you, then check in for the new boarding pass. A kiosk can do the same with your confirmation code.
- Look for a better option yourself. Earlier flights via another hub often exist. Ask the agent for that exact flight number; if nothing on American goes until tomorrow and the delay was American's fault, ask for a partner airline.
- Ask why the first flight was late. Crew, maintenance or a late inbound aircraft on American's side counts as "caused by us"; weather does not. The cause decides the meal credit and hotel.
- Ask for the meal credit and hotel. The plan says "upon request". Meal credits and vouchers can show in the app and on aa.com.
- Deciding not to travel? Say so before accepting anything, then request the refund.
- Keep everything. Screenshot the delay notice, the new itinerary and any receipts. If American could not give a hotel voucher, it says it reimburses reasonable hotel and transport costs.
Checklist
- Both flights on one confirmation code (if not, read the separate-tickets row above)
- Delay cause noted (American vs weather), with a screenshot of the app message
- New itinerary checked: same cabin as booked, bags rerouted (they move when you check in for the new flight)
- Food/beverage credit asked for at 3+ hours past scheduled departure (American-caused delays)
- Hotel voucher and transport asked for if overnight away from home (American-caused delays)
- Receipts kept for any hotel, taxi or meals you paid yourself
- Refund decision made before accepting a rebooking
Why "caused by us" matters so much
American uses the same split as most US airlines. Its Conditions of Carriage say it is not liable if it is late or you miss your connection, and that its obligations are rebooking, the care in its Customer Service Plan and refunds. The care part (food credit, hotel, transport) applies only when the disruption was caused by American. Weather, air traffic control, security and government orders count as events beyond its control. US law does not require cash compensation for delays, so for a domestic trip the realistic wins are a fast rebooking, the meal credit, the hotel, and a refund if you choose not to travel.
The US DOT airline customer service dashboard lists what each large US airline has committed to for controllable delays; if an agent says no to something listed there, ask politely for a supervisor and quote the Customer Service Plan.
Trips from the EU, UK or Canada (the only time a claim service helps)
If your trip on one booking started in the EU or UK and you reached your final destination 3 or more hours late because of a missed connection, EU261 or UK261 can pay up to EUR 600 / GBP 520 per passenger, depending on distance, unless the cause was extraordinary (bad weather, air traffic control strikes). It covers any airline leaving the EU or UK, including American. Free route: claim from American's Customer Relations yourself with our EU261 claim letter. Paid route:

Common questions
Will American rebook me if I miss my connection?
Yes, when both flights are on the same ticket and the first one ran late. American's Conditions of Carriage (updated August 13, 2026) say that when a delay could cause you to miss your connection, it rebooks you on the next American flight with available seats at no additional cost, in your original cabin. If there is no American flight until the next day and American caused the disruption, it rebooks you on a partner airline.
Does American give a hotel or meal voucher for a missed connection?
Only when the delay was caused by American. Its Customer Service Plan (updated August 26, 2026) lists, on request, a hotel voucher if you are delayed overnight away from home, transport to and from the hotel, and a food or beverage credit when the delay is 3 or more hours past your scheduled departure. For weather and other events outside its control, you pay your own hotel and meals.
Can I get a refund instead of taking the new flight?
Yes, if the disruption is significant and you decline the rebooking: DOT rules let you get the unused ticket value back even on a non-refundable fare. American's refund page says you are not eligible once you accept a rebooking or fly the delayed flight, so decide before you accept.
Does American pay cash compensation for a missed connection?
Not on US flights: the Conditions of Carriage say American is not liable if it is late or you miss your connection, beyond rebooking, care and refunds. Cash compensation can apply under EU261 or UK261 when the trip leaves the EU or UK and you reach your final destination 3 or more hours late, and under Canada's APPR on flights to or from Canada.
What if my two flights were on separate tickets?
Then American has no duty to protect the second flight: each ticket is its own contract. Call American before the second flight's departure and ask what it can change; with a non-refundable fare, cancelling before departure keeps a travel credit.
How we checked this
On October 28, 2026 we read American's Conditions of Carriage (updated August 13, 2026: "Delays, cancellations and diversions", "Our responsibilities when there are schedule / operations changes", "Events beyond our control" and "Ticket types and refunds"), its Customer Service Plan (updated August 26, 2026) and its delayed or canceled flight support page; the refund rule for accepted rebookings is from aa.com/refunds. Meal credit amounts are not published by American, so none are quoted here. This is general information, not legal advice.
