Airalo eSIM not working? Fix it by symptom, on iPhone and Android
Most "no internet" problems with an Airalo eSIM come down to four settings: the eSIM isn't the data line, data roaming is off for it, it's missing an APN, or you're not in the plan's country yet. Find your symptom in the table, apply the fix, and you're usually online in under five minutes. Steps checked against Airalo's help center on October 22, 2026.

The 30-second answer
Are you in the plan's country yet? If not, "Activating" or "No Service" is normal. Airalo says the eSIM finishes activating on its own once you're inside its coverage area.
Already there and no data? Do these four things, in order: (1) set the Airalo eSIM as your cellular data line; (2) turn data roaming on for the Airalo eSIM (and off for your home SIM); (3) if the Airalo app lists an APN for your plan, enter it; (4) toggle Airplane Mode on and off, or restart.
Still nothing? Pick the network manually, switch 5G to LTE, then contact Airalo support in the app (24/7). Don't delete the eSIM: Airalo's help center says a removed eSIM can't be reinstalled from the same QR code.
Find your symptom
| What you see | Most likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| "Activating" or "No Service" before you land | You're outside the plan's coverage area | Nothing. It connects when you arrive. Keep the eSIM installed and switched on. |
| Signal bars but no internet | Data roaming off for the eSIM, wrong data line, or missing APN | Steps 1-3 below (data line, roaming, APN). |
| "No Service" after you've arrived | Phone is trying the wrong local network, or 5G is unstable | Step 5 (manual network) and step 6 (LTE instead of 5G), then restart. |
| "Cellular Plans From This Carrier Cannot Be Added" (iPhone) | Your phone is carrier-locked | Settings > General > About > Carrier Lock should say "No SIM restrictions." If not, ask your US carrier to unlock it. Airalo can't fix a lock. |
| "This code is no longer valid" | The QR code was already used, or a scan was cut off by a weak connection | Turn off any VPN, use stable Wi-Fi, update your phone, and try the manual install from the Airalo app. If you deleted the eSIM, contact Airalo support. |
| Data works, then stops mid-trip | The data or the days ran out | Check remaining data in the Airalo app and add a top-up package. |
| Home carrier texts you about roaming charges | Your home SIM is still the data line with roaming on | Set Airalo as the data line and turn roaming off for your home line (step 2). |

The fixes, step by step
Step 1: Make the Airalo eSIM your data line
iPhone: Settings > Cellular (Mobile Data) > Cellular Data > choose the Airalo line. Turn off "Allow Cellular Data Switching" so the phone doesn't fall back to your home SIM.
Android: Settings > Network & internet (Connections on Samsung) > SIMs (SIM manager) > Mobile data > choose the Airalo eSIM.
Tip from Airalo: give the eSIM a clear label such as "Airalo Japan" so you don't mix up lines.
Step 2: Turn data roaming on, for the eSIM only
An Airalo eSIM connects through a local partner network, so your phone treats it as roaming. With roaming off, you'll see bars and get no data.
iPhone: Settings > Cellular > tap the Airalo line > Data Roaming on. Leave Data Roaming off on your home line to avoid charges.
Android: roaming is often one switch for all SIMs. Airalo's advice is to turn your primary SIM off while you travel so it can't roam.
Some plans say roaming should be off. Follow the "How to connect" instructions under My eSIMs > Details in the Airalo app for your specific plan.
Step 3: Add the APN if your plan has one
Most Airalo eSIMs set the APN automatically. If the app's Access Data screen lists one, add it:
- iPhone: Settings > Cellular > Airalo line > Cellular Data Network > paste the APN into the Cellular Data APN field.
- Android / Pixel: Settings > Network & internet > SIMs > Airalo eSIM > Access Point Names > +. Airalo's Pixel steps: name it "Airalo", paste the APN, leave the other fields blank, save, and make sure it's selected.
Step 4: Airplane Mode on and off, then restart
Airplane Mode blocks the eSIM. Toggle it on for 10 seconds, off again, and wait while the phone searches. If that doesn't work, restart the phone.
Step 5: Pick the network by hand
The Airalo app lists the partner networks for your plan. Turn off automatic network selection (iPhone: Airalo line > Network Selection; Android: Mobile network > Automatically select network) and choose one from that list.
Step 6: Switch 5G to LTE, and turn off other SIMs
If you're on 5G, Airalo suggests trying 4G/LTE. On iPhone it's under the Airalo line > Voice & Data; on Android, under mobile network settings > Preferred network type. If your phone runs two SIMs at once, switch the other one off for a moment.
Step 7: Contact Airalo support (free, 24/7)
If none of this works, open the Airalo app's help chat or Airalo's contact page. Have your order number, phone model and a screenshot of your Cellular settings ready. Airalo's help center notes a weak local signal can also be the cause, so mention where you are.
Don't do these
- Don't delete the eSIM to "reinstall" it. Airalo says a removed eSIM can't be reinstalled. Turning a line off is safe; deleting it isn't.
- Don't leave roaming on for your home SIM. A US carrier day pass is usually about $12 a day per line, and it can trigger automatically.
- Don't run a VPN while installing. Airalo lists a VPN as one cause of the "code no longer valid" error.
Before your next trip: a 2-minute checklist
- Check your phone is unlocked (iPhone: Carrier Lock says "No SIM restrictions").
- Install the eSIM at home on Wi-Fi. Validity starts on first connection in the destination, not at install, on most Airalo plans; check your plan's details.
- Screenshot the Access Data screen (APN and networks) so you have it offline.
- Label the line and set it as the data line when you land.
- Save hotel Wi-Fi details and an offline map in case you need to troubleshoot on arrival.
Free alternatives while you sort it out
Airport, hotel and cafe Wi-Fi will let you reach Airalo support chat for free. If you keep having trouble with one provider, Saily (by the makers of NordVPN) is another option with its own app and 24/7 support: see Saily plans. Switching providers won't help if the cause is a carrier lock or roaming setting, so fix those first.
Saily code PIVOT10 takes 10% off your first Saily purchase (all plans); it is applied automatically through the Saily link on this page.

How we checked this
On October 22, 2026 we read Airalo's help-center articles: Why is my eSIM not working?, "Cellular Plans From This Carrier Cannot be Added", eSIM stuck activating on iOS, Airalo on a Google Pixel and "This code is no longer valid". The articles carry no dates, so menu names can shift with iOS and Android updates. This page was drafted with AI assistance and checked against those sources.
