Airalo Italy eSIM: which plan for how many days
Airalo sells Italy as fixed-data plans (from $4) and unlimited plans (from $11). Here is what each costs today, which one fits your trip length, when your own carrier or a local SIM is cheaper, and how to set it up before you land in Rome, Milan or Venice.
Ad / affiliate disclosure: I may earn a commission if you buy an eSIM through the Airalo, Yesim or Saily links on this page, at no extra cost to you. Using your carrier's plan or a local SIM costs me nothing to recommend. PracticalPivot is not affiliated with Airalo. Prepared with AI assistance; Airalo prices were read on October 13, 2026 and Yesim prices on October 12, 2026.
The 30-second answer
Best plan for most week-long Italy trips: Airalo 5GB for 7 days ($10). It covers maps, messages and some Instagram.
Heavy use (streaming, hotspot): Airalo unlimited, 7 days for $23.
Two weeks to a month: Airalo 10GB for 15 days ($18) or 20GB for 30 days ($26). A TIM Tourist SIM bought in Italy (about €25 with your passport) is cheapest for heavy use if you don't mind a store visit.
Italy plus other countries: use a Europe regional plan instead (see Best eSIM for Europe).

Airalo lists Wind Tre as the main Italian network. Its Italy page opens on the unlimited tab; the fixed-data plans are under the "Fixed data" tab. It did not state a speed cap for unlimited plans; unlimited eSIM plans often slow down after heavy daily use, so read the plan's "fair usage" line in the app before you pay.

Common questions
Which Airalo Italy plan is best for 7 days?
For most travelers, the 5GB / 7-day plan ($10 on October 13, 2026). If you stream video or hotspot a laptop, the 7-day unlimited plan ($23).
Does Airalo have fixed-data plans for Italy?
Yes. Besides unlimited plans, Airalo sells Italy plans from 1GB / 3 days ($4) up to 50GB / 30 days ($35). They are under the "Fixed data" tab on Airalo's Italy page.
Is Airalo cheaper than AT&T or Verizon in Italy?
Usually. AT&T's International Day Pass and Verizon's TravelPass both charge $12 a day, so a week costs about $84, compared with $10 for Airalo's 5GB / 7-day plan. Many T-Mobile plans include basic data in Italy at no extra cost.
Check your US carrier first (it may be free or cheaper)
| Carrier | Italy option | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| T-Mobile | Many plans include data and texting in Italy at no extra cost; higher plans include some high-speed GB | Basic plans are slow abroad (around 256 kbps after any high-speed allowance). Check "International" in your plan details. |
| AT&T | International Day Pass: $12/day for one line, $6/day for each extra line, max 10 charged days per bill | 7 days = $84 for one line, far more than any eSIM above |
| Verizon | TravelPass: $12/day in most countries | Charges apply on every day you use the phone abroad unless you turn data roaming off |
The free-ish option: a local Italian SIM
TIM's Tourist SIM is sold in TIM stores to visitors with a passport. Recent reports put it at about €25 for 30 days with a very large data allowance (200GB) and an Italian number, with a smaller part usable elsewhere in the EU. Italian law requires ID registration for every SIM, so bring your passport and allow 10-30 minutes; airport kiosks can cost more and have queues. It needs a free physical SIM slot or an eSIM QR from the store, and you won't have data when you land. An eSIM bought before you fly avoids all of that, which is the main thing you pay extra for.
How to set up an Airalo eSIM for Italy
- Check your phone: it must support eSIM and be carrier-unlocked. On iPhone: Settings > General > About, look for "Carrier Lock: No SIM restrictions".
- Buy and install at home on Wi-Fi a day or two before you fly. Airalo lets you install early; don't delete the eSIM after installing.
- Label it "Italy" and keep your home line on for calls and texts if you want, but set Cellular Data to the Italy eSIM.
- Turn data roaming ON for the Italy eSIM (it is technically roaming) and OFF for your home line so your carrier can't start a $12 day pass.
- When you land, switch the Italy line on; give it a minute to find Wind Tre or a partner network. If no data, toggle airplane mode once.
Before you fly: checklist
- Phone unlocked and eSIM-capable
- Plan length covers your last day (count arrival and departure days)
- eSIM installed on Wi-Fi at home, QR code or app login saved
- Home line: data roaming off (avoids day-pass charges)
- Offline Google Maps of Rome/Florence/Venice downloaded as a backup
