Airalo Iceland eSIM: Iceland plan or Europe plan (the EU+UK plan won't work)
Airalo's popular European Union + UK plan does not cover Iceland: on October 28, 2026 it listed 28 countries and Iceland was not one of them. For Iceland you need Airalo's Iceland plan (Siminn and Nova networks; 10GB for 30 days, $19.50) or its 41-country Europe plan (10GB for 30 days, $31). Here is which one to buy for a Reykjavik stopover, a Golden Circle week or the full Ring Road.

Free options (guesthouse Wi-Fi, an EU/EEA home SIM) cost me nothing to recommend. PracticalPivot is not affiliated with Airalo, Siminn, Nova or Safetravel. The 30-second answer
Iceland only (stopover, Golden Circle, Ring Road): Airalo's Iceland plan. 5GB for 7 days is $11; 10GB for 30 days is $19.50. It lists Siminn and Nova, Iceland's two largest mobile networks.
Iceland plus London, Paris, Norway or anywhere else in Europe: Airalo's Europe plan (41 countries, Iceland included). Not the European Union and United Kingdom plan: Iceland is not on its list.
Heavy use: the Iceland plan's unlimited week is $26.50 (full speed for 3GB a day, then 1 Mbps). The Europe plan's is $27 with 5GB a day at full speed.
Highlands or F-roads: no eSIM fixes missing towers. Save offline maps and leave a travel plan on Safetravel.is.

Airalo's Iceland plan also sells 3GB / 3 days for $7. The European Union + UK plan is left out of this table because it does not cover Iceland; its 28-country list (read October 28, 2026) is the 27 EU countries plus the UK. Both plans on this page start when the eSIM first connects to a network, so you can install them at home.
Which plan for your Iceland trip
| Trip | Light use (maps, weather, road conditions, messages) | Heavy use (video calls, streaming, hotspot for the car) |
|---|---|---|
| Stopover, 1-3 days in Reykjavik | Iceland 1GB / 3 days, $4 (or 3GB / 3 days, $7) | Iceland unlimited 3 days, $11 |
| Golden Circle + South Coast, about a week | Iceland 5GB / 7 days, $11 | Iceland 10GB / 7 days, $18.50, or unlimited 7 days, $26.50 |
| Full Ring Road, 10-15 days | Iceland 5GB / 15 days, $11.50 (10GB / 15 days is $18.50) | Iceland 20GB / 15 days, $29.50, or unlimited 15 days, $48 |
| A month, or a working trip | Iceland 10GB / 30 days, $19.50 | Iceland 50GB / 30 days, $49 |
| Iceland plus London, Paris, Oslo or Copenhagen | One Europe plan: 3GB / 7 days $11, 10GB / 30 days $31, unlimited 7 days $27. See the Europe eSIM guide. | |
Unlimited only beats fixed data if you really use more than about 1.5GB a day. A 10GB / 7-day plan ($18.50) covers maps, road and weather apps, and photo uploads for most road trips.
Coverage: where your phone will and won't work
Mobile coverage in Iceland is good in Reykjavik, other towns and along most of Route 1, but it has gaps: deep fjords, some mountain passes and long empty stretches, and much of the interior. Many Highland F-roads have no signal at all, on any network.
| Where | What to do |
|---|---|
| Reykjavik, Keflavik airport, Golden Circle, South Coast towns | Either plan works. Pick on price. |
| Ring Road, East Fjords, Westfjords | Check your route on the official Fjarskiptastofa coverage map (Iceland's telecom regulator; it shows estimated combined 4G/5G coverage of all networks and warns its data comes mostly from the operators). Download offline maps for the whole route. |
| Highlands, F-roads, glacier and long hikes | Expect no signal. Leave a travel plan and use the 112 Iceland app on Safetravel.is (run by ICE-SAR, Iceland's search and rescue association). Safetravel warns the app is not a replacement for proper communication equipment where there is no coverage. |
| Northern lights drives | You will often be outside towns at night. Save the aurora and cloud forecast before you leave Wi-Fi. |
Free and cheap alternatives
| Option | What it does | Catch |
|---|---|---|
| Hotel and guesthouse Wi-Fi | Free and common | Nothing on the road between stops, which is where you need maps and road conditions |
| EU/EEA home SIM | "Roam like at home" covers Iceland, which is in the EEA (European Commission) | Only for SIMs from EU/EEA countries, not US or UK plans (UK carriers set their own rules) |
| Nova tourist eSIM | Nova, an Icelandic network, sells its own unlimited eSIM for visitors that activates on arrival; plastic SIMs are sold at the ELKO shop at Keflavik airport (Nova) | Nova's prices could not be read for this guide; compare before buying |
| Verizon TravelPass / AT&T Day Pass | Your US number and data, $12/day for one line (read October 21, 2026) | A week = $84, against $11-$26.50 on Airalo |
| Rental car Wi-Fi router | One connection for the whole car | Daily fee; stops working when you walk away from the car |
Common questions
Does the Airalo EU+UK eSIM work in Iceland?
No. On October 28, 2026, Airalo's European Union and United Kingdom plan listed 28 countries and Iceland was not one of them (Iceland is in the European Economic Area, not the EU). Airalo's Iceland plan and its 41-country Europe plan both cover Iceland.
Which network does the Airalo Iceland eSIM use?
Airalo's Iceland plan lists two Icelandic networks, Siminn (spelled "Simmin" on Airalo's page) and Nova, both marked 5G. It is data only: no Icelandic phone number.
Is the Airalo Iceland plan or the Europe plan cheaper?
For Iceland alone, the Iceland plan: 10GB for 30 days was $19.50 vs $31 on the Europe plan (October 28, 2026). Unlimited is closer: 7 days was $26.50 on the Iceland plan and $27 on the Europe plan, and the Europe plan slows down later (after 5GB a day instead of 3GB).
Will my phone work on the Ring Road and in the Highlands?
Towns and most of the main road have mobile coverage, but there are gaps in fjords, mountain passes and the interior, and many Highland F-roads have no signal at all. Check your route on the official Fjarskiptastofa coverage map, download offline maps, and leave a travel plan on Safetravel.is before driving into the Highlands.
Do I need an eSIM if my rental car has Wi-Fi?
Some Icelandic rental companies rent a pocket or in-car Wi-Fi router for a daily fee. It shares one connection with everyone in the car but stops working when you walk away from it, and on a week-long trip it usually costs more than an eSIM per person. Compare the daily fee with the plan prices above.
How to set up an Airalo eSIM for Iceland
- Check your phone: it must support eSIM and be carrier-unlocked. On iPhone: Settings > General > About, look for "Carrier Lock: No SIM restrictions".
- Choose the Iceland plan or the Europe plan using the tables above. Do not buy the EU+UK plan for Iceland.
- Install at home on Wi-Fi, a day or two before you fly. Don't delete the eSIM after installing.
- Label it "Iceland", set Cellular Data to it, turn data roaming ON for the eSIM and OFF for your US line so no $12 day pass starts.
- When you land at Keflavik, give it a minute to connect to Siminn or Nova. If there's no data, toggle airplane mode once, or see Airalo eSIM not working: fixes by phone.
Before you go: checklist
- Iceland plan (Iceland only) or Europe plan (other countries too) chosen; not the EU+UK plan
- Route checked on the Fjarskiptastofa coverage map; offline maps saved for the whole trip
- eSIM installed at home; phone unlocked
- Plan length covers your last day, including the flight-home day
- US line: data roaming off
- Highlands or long hikes: travel plan left on Safetravel.is, 112 Iceland app installed

How we checked this
On October 28, 2026 I read every fixed and unlimited plan, the fair-use note and the network list on Airalo's Iceland page, and the plans and country lists on Airalo's Europe page (41 countries, Iceland included) and its European Union and United Kingdom page (28 countries, Iceland not included). The coverage-map description comes from Fjarskiptastofa's own map page; the 112 app and travel plan come from Safetravel.is; the Nova eSIM details come from Nova's English page. Verizon and AT&T day-pass prices were read on their own pages on October 21, 2026. Saily's Iceland page blocked automated reading today and Yesim was not checked, so this guide gives no prices for them. I did not run speed tests, so this guide makes no claim about which network is faster on your route. Drafted with AI assistance and checked against those pages; the "updated" date changes only when the facts are re-checked.
