Airalo Turkey eSIM: buy it before you fly

Airalo says you can't buy its eSIMs while you're in Turkey, so set one up at home. Its Turkey eSIM runs on Turk Telekom 5G and costs $9 for 5GB over 7 days, or $14.50 for 10GB (checked October 21, 2026). Here is every Airalo Turkey plan, which one fits your trip, and how it compares with a US carrier day pass.

Ad / affiliate disclosure: I may earn a commission if you buy an eSIM through the Airalo, Saily or Yesim links on this page, at no extra cost to you. Using hotel and cafe Wi-Fi, or a plan you already pay for, costs me nothing to recommend. PracticalPivot is not affiliated with Airalo. The 30-second answer

Buy and install the eSIM before you leave. Airalo's Turkey page says eSIMs can't currently be purchased in Turkey. Install it at home on Wi-Fi; it starts counting days only when it first connects in Turkey.

One week in Istanbul or Cappadocia: Airalo 5GB for 7 days ($9), or 10GB for 7 days ($14.50) if you post a lot of photos or video. That is less than one or two days of a US carrier day pass ($12 a day on Verizon TravelPass or AT&T International Day Pass).

Two weeks to a month: Airalo 10GB for 15 days ($15) or 20GB for 30 days ($22.50). Skip the unlimited plans unless you'll stream daily: 7 days unlimited is $24.50, and 10GB for the same week is $14.50.

Going on to Northern Cyprus? Airalo says this eSIM doesn't cover it.

You can't buy the eSIM in TurkeyAiralo's Turkey page says eSIMs currently can't be purchased in Turkey.Buy and install it at home, before your flight. Keep the QR code or the app login in case you need to reinstall.
Phone registration (IMEI)Airalo says that if you use its data for 91 days or more (added up) in a 120-day period, you must register your phone's IMEI on Turkey's Central Equipment Identification Register and pay a one-time tax.A normal vacation is well under that. Long stays (study, remote work) need registration through Turkey's e-Devlet portal; check the current fee there before you go.

Common questions

Can I buy an Airalo eSIM after I arrive in Turkey?

No. On October 21, 2026, Airalo's Turkey page said eSIMs can't currently be purchased in Turkey, and it recommends buying and installing before you travel. The plan's validity starts when it first connects to a network in Turkey, so buying early doesn't waste days.

Which Airalo Turkey plan is best for 7 days?

For most travelers, the 5GB / 7-day plan ($9 on October 21, 2026). If you upload a lot of photos and video, take 10GB / 7 days ($14.50), which is $10 less than 7 days unlimited ($24.50).

Is an eSIM cheaper than a US carrier day pass in Turkey?

Usually, yes. Verizon TravelPass and AT&T International Day Pass are each $12 a day for one line, about $84 for a week, against $9 to $14.50 for a week of Airalo data. Verizon's $100 International Monthly Plan (20GB) costs more than Airalo's 20GB / 30-day plan ($22.50).

Do I need to register my phone in Turkey?

Not for a normal trip. Airalo says registration of the phone's IMEI (with a one-time tax) is required if you use its data for 91 days or more, added up, within a 120-day period.

Does the Airalo Turkey eSIM work in Northern Cyprus?

No. Airalo's Turkey page says the eSIM does not cover Northern Cyprus.

How to set up an Airalo eSIM for Turkey

  1. Check your phone: it must support eSIM and be carrier-unlocked. On iPhone: Settings > General > About, look for "Carrier Lock: No SIM restrictions".
  2. Buy and install at home on Wi-Fi, a day or two before you go. You can't buy it once you're in Turkey. Don't delete the eSIM after installing.
  3. Label it "Turkey" and set Cellular Data to the Turkey eSIM.
  4. Turn data roaming ON for the Turkey eSIM and OFF for your US line so your carrier can't start a $12 day pass.
  5. When you land, give the Turkey line a minute to find Turk Telekom. If there's no data, toggle airplane mode once.

Before you go: checklist

  • eSIM bought and installed at home (not possible in Turkey)
  • Phone unlocked and eSIM-capable
  • Plan length covers your last day (count arrival and departure days)
  • US line: data roaming off (avoids day-pass charges)
  • Offline maps saved for Cappadocia and coastal drives
  • Separate plan if you continue to Northern Cyprus or Greece

How we checked this

On October 21, 2026 I read the plan list, network, Northern Cyprus note, purchase restriction and IMEI note on Airalo's Turkey page, and the day-pass prices on Verizon's and AT&T's own pages. Saily, Yesim and T-Mobile pages could not be read that day, so this guide gives no prices for them. Drafted with AI assistance and checked against those pages; the "last checked" date changes only when the facts are re-checked.
