HALLOWEEN 2026 · SALEM, MASSACHUSETTS
Salem in October 2026: getting there, road closures and what to book ahead
Salem expects around a million visitors this October, its 400th-anniversary year, and Halloween falls on a Saturday. The trip goes well or badly mostly on three things: how you get into town, which tickets you buy before you arrive, and which day you pick.
Ad / affiliate disclosure: I may earn a commission if you book a tour through the GetYourGuide links on this page, at no extra cost to you. Everything else here (train, ferry, museum tickets, the free sights) is booked directly with the operator and earns me nothing. I have not taken these tours. Prepared with AI assistance.
The 30-second answer
- Don't drive into downtown on a weekend. Take the MBTA Commuter Rail from Boston's North Station (a $10 Weekend Pass covers unlimited rides on Saturday and Sunday), or the Salem Ferry from Long Wharf.
- Buy timed tickets before you go. The Salem Witch Museum sells October tickets online only, from 10 PM the night before. The House of the Seven Gables requires advance tickets, and they can't be refunded or rescheduled.
- Go on a weekday if you can. Weekend street closures, parking bans and lines all hit Friday afternoon to Sunday night.
- Halloween night (Sat Oct 31) is a different event. Downtown streets close by noon, the train-station garage shuts at 6 PM, and the night ends with a 10:15 PM drone show.
The October calendar that changes your plans
| Date | What's happening | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| Every Fri–Sun in October | Essex Street (Hawthorne Blvd to New Liberty St) closed to through traffic; no on-street parking 9 AM–10 PM Sat/Sun and noon–10 PM Fri | Driving downtown is slow and parking is scarce. Arrive by train or ferry. |
| Mon Oct 12 (Indigenous Peoples' Day) | Long weekend; free parking at 108 Jefferson Avenue applies on weekends and this holiday | Treat it like a third weekend day for crowds. |
| Oct 15–19 | "Haunted Fables" performances at the House of the Seven Gables | Listed as nearly sold out in the Gables' October plan. |
| Sat Oct 17 | Hawthorne's Halloween Bash (costume party in the Gables' gardens, 7 PM) | Ticketed; book now if you want it. |
| Sat Oct 24 | Haunted Speakeasy at Hamilton Hall | One of the main ticketed parties on the Haunted Happenings calendar. |
| Sat Oct 31 (Halloween) | All downtown streets close no later than noon; MBTA Salem garage closed 6 PM–1 AM; Bridge Street closed 9:15–11:30 PM; drone show 10:15 PM | Busiest day of the year. Come by train, eat early, and plan your exit before the drone show ends. |
The Grand Parade opened the season on Thursday, October 1.
Getting there: train, ferry or car
| Option | How it works | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| MBTA Commuter Rail | Newburyport/Rockport Line from North Station to Salem Depot, about 30 minutes. Extra trains run at peak times every October weekend. $10 Weekend Pass = unlimited rides Sat and Sun. | Almost everyone coming from Boston | Full-size bikes and scooters aren't allowed on this line's weekend trains. Check added times at mbta.com/cr. |
| Salem Ferry | Boston Harbor City Cruises from Long Wharf to the Blaney Street terminal, roughly 50 minutes. Season runs through October 31. | Staying near the Boston waterfront; a scenic way in | October weekend sailings can sell out: buy return tickets before you go, and note the last boat back. |
| Car | Free parking at 108 Jefferson Avenue (behind Salem Hospital) on weekends and Indigenous Peoples' Day; downtown garages fill early | Weekdays, families with small kids | Don't park in resident-permit zones: the city tows and fines. On Halloween, downtown is closed to cars from noon. |
| Guided day trip from Boston | A tour that includes transport and a guide | First-timers who don't want to plan logistics | Check exactly what's included (entry tickets usually aren't) and the return time. |

Free things worth your time
You don't need a ticket for some of the most moving parts of a visit:
- Salem Witch Trials Memorial on Liberty Street, with the Old Burying Point (Charter Street Cemetery) beside it.
- Salem Maritime National Historical Park on Derby Street: the waterfront, wharves and grounds are free to walk.
- Salem Common and the Essex Street pedestrian mall, where most of the street performers and costumes are on weekends.
- A self-guided walk between the memorial, the Witch House exterior on Essex Street and the harbor, using the free Destination Salem app for a map.
Checklist for the day
- Date picked (weekday if possible; avoid Oct 31 with small kids).
- Witch Museum alarm set for 10 PM the night before.
- Seven Gables and any evening tour booked for that exact date.
- Train pass in the mTicket app, or ferry tickets both ways, and the last departure back noted.
- Comfortable shoes and a layer: most of the day is outdoors and on foot, and late-October evenings get cold.
- Costume rules on Halloween: the city's 2025 Halloween rules banned weapons (real or fake) and public drinking; expect the same.
