Before you sell your first digital download

A useful file is a good start. A clear buyer, an honest product page, and a tested checkout turn it into something someone can confidently purchase.

1. Choose one buyer and one task

Start with a specific job: a project-brief template for freelance designers, a packing checklist for weekend travelers, or an invoice tracker for a small service business. Say who it helps and what they can do with it. Avoid promising income or guaranteed outcomes.

2. Make the file useful

Include a clean version, a filled-in example, and simple instructions. Open the download on another device. Check that fonts, formulas, and links work. Only include assets you created or have permission to sell.

3. Show exactly what buyers get

Use readable previews and list the file formats, page count or contents, required software, license, and support terms. A buyer should know what is included before reaching checkout.

4. Compare the full cost

Payhip is one storefront option for selling digital products. Check its current plan price, platform transaction fee, payment-processing fees, and available payment methods before choosing. A free monthly plan can still carry transaction fees.

5. Test, share, and measure

Test the checkout and file-delivery experience using the platform’s test options. Share a useful preview with people who have the problem your file solves. Track purchases separately from page views. A storefront alone does not create demand.

Your next step: Write a one-sentence product description, make one useful sample, and ask a potential buyer whether it solves their task before expanding the product.

Collect emails from the first preview. The people who download your free sample are your most likely first buyers, and an email list stays yours if you change stores. Kit (formerly ConvertKit) listed a free plan for up to 10,000 subscribers with unlimited landing pages, forms and broadcasts on October 12, 2026; automations start on its paid Creator plan. A free sign-up form that sends your sample is enough to start.
